To be a member you must be willing to find an evil interpretation in everything people do which brings them happiness. Badges of merit are presented to those who secretly denounce their neighbors to secret police or committees. If denunciations are loud and convincing enough, personal hypocracy is quite in order. Each individual member may consider himself qualified to determine what is sultable reading, behaviour etc, for his friends and neighbors, and as the strength of the league grows legislators may be successful in banning anything and everything any member of the league disapproves of. Of course, some league members will chafe when their own freedoms are curtailed, but is this too great a price to pay to bring misery and deprivation to multitudes of others? The ultimate success of the league will be to bring all aesthetic expression to a halt and when no one is doing anything or saying anything, the possible evils from pleasurable activity will be almost com plete averted, except that some reactionary individuals will still THINK of pleasant things. Perhaps such brazen rebels can be forced to take lie-detector tests and if it is determined they have been thinking of pleasure, appropriate punishment can be meted out. If you do not believe yourself yet qualified for membership in the League, you can at least cooperate with its aims by immediately reporting to officials any act of pleasure you observe, perhaps embellishing the facts sufficiently to cause misery and unhappiness for the participants. Turn a deaf ear to those psychologists who say that when we see evil in others it is usually a projected shame we feel in our own lives.
